It’s barely May, but already we are starting to have a very good idea of which Steelers players might make the final 53 man roster.
Many things will happen between now and the start of the season, so this roster prediction is definitely subject to change. Players will get injured, and the Steelers could still bring in a free agent or two between now and preseason. There is also always the odd chance an UDFA (like Eli Rogers), earns his way onto the roster.
However, knowing what we know after the NFL Draft, here is my early roster prediction for the 2017 Pittsburgh Steelers:
I have six of the Steelers seven rookies making the team as of now, with rookie cornerback Brian Hill as the 53rd man on the bubble. There are no big surprises here.
Zach Mettenberger gets the boot with Josh Dobbs coming to town, and Xavier Grimble is gone for an extra defensive back. Cobi Hamilton and DeMarcus Ayers are gone to make room for Martavis Bryant and JuJu Smith-Schuster. Also, the loss of Lawrence Timmons means Tyler Matekevich and L.J. Fort get to stay on the roster for another year. T.J. Watt replaces Jarvis Jones, and Tyson Alualu is added to the defensive line.
It’s unlikely this prediction comes without its share of flaws, but it will be interesting to see how things unfold as we approach the 2017 NFL season.
